What we liked about the BabyBjӧrn Cradle

The BabyBjӧrn Cradle does the most important job a bassinet needs to do: keep baby sleeping safe. Newborn babies sleep most of the day and there is no doubt that the BabyBjӧrn Cradle has succeeded in doing so.

It is a minimalist bassinet so you won’t get all fancy bells and whistles but it has all the important functions you need. The rocking sensation is more like a bouncing, jiggling move (Similar to the BabyBjӧrn bouncer which is another very successful product of the company) but it does its job by lulling & comforting baby to sleep

Apart from the main function, the BabyBjӧrn Cradle is perfect for small spaces. It has an area footprint of less than 5 sq ft.

It is very light compared to most bassinets at 13lbs. You can easily lift it up and carry it around the house without much effort. Also, the assembly is easy and you can easily fold it up with just removing the 2 allen key screws.

The entire bassinet is made out of ventilated mesh so you. This allows air to circulate and allows you to see your baby through the mesh.

Newborn babies sometimes startle and wake themselves up in the middle of the night and can’t soothe themselves to sleep, they need to be comforted and soothe.

The cradle’s gentle springy rocking is similar to the soothing motion of a stroller. You can easily rock the cradle with your hand or foot, and it also turns your baby’s own movements into gentle rocking.

This was essential in the middle of the night to have just a gentle tap on the side from me to go back to sleep ~ A BabyBjӧrn Cradle satisfied customer.

What we didn’t like about the BabyBjӧrn Cradle

First thing is that the BabyBjӧrn Cradle stands at 26”. For some taller parents, this may be a little too low to keep bending your back to pick up your baby. Some parents complained of having back strains. Fortunately there are some tips on how to fix this.

Secondly, the  mattress is a custom size and shape so you need special sheets. You can buy the sheets from BabyBjӧrn, but they tend to pricier. And yes, the BabyBjӧrn Cradle is also a premium product so the price tag is definitely higher than most other bassinets.

The BabyBjӧrn Cradle has a good length of 31 inches for a bassinet, However, babies can grow fast so they may grow out of this in just a few months. A taller baby may have to transition to a full size crib at around 4 months.

PROS

  • Good quality
  • Small footprint <5 sq ft.
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • All around mesh

CONS

  • Pricey
  • A bit low for tall parents
  • Taller babies outgrow <6 months

It can be a little difficult to assemble and some of the screws are very tight.

Chicco Hug 4 in 1

Chicco - The Company

Chicco is a household name in the baby products market.

With more than 50 years in the baby products industry and developed a solid reputation for car seats, strollers, cribs and bassinets, one can simply be assured by its quality build for baby gear and furniture.

Chicco Baby Hug 4 in 1

Chicco Baby Hug is a unique 4-in-1 baby gear product that covers your baby’s needs from birth to 3 years old !

From birth, it is a portable crib / bassinet with incline support to aid babies with congestion and reflux. The soft removable reducer allows your baby to sleep safely overnight.

Beyond 6 months, the Chicco Baby Hug transforms into a convenient highchair and table chair.

The Baby Hug 4-in-1 is extremely versatile.

By pressing the foot pedal you can adjust the hug to the perfect height for your baby, while the 4 braked wheels make it easy to move around the house.

The electronic toy bar will entertain your baby with sounds, lights and soft plush toys.

In a highchair configuration, the Baby Hug can be easily put next to any table thanks to the adjustable height so your baby can enjoy the family meals.

Finally, when in the first chair configuration, you can easily recline the backrest to provide maximum comfort to your baby.

What we like about the Chicco Hug 4 in 1

Versatile and super convenient!

It's a “must have” if you live in a single storey abode (whether it is a house or apartment) because it's really comfortable to have a portable bassinet / crib that moves from one side of the house to the other, and so much more.

The Chicco Baby Hug 4 in 1 can be used as a crib, a raised recliner, a highchair and a table chair, to accompany you and your little one in each moment of the day and of the night.

Thanks to the 4 swivelling wheels and the mesh fabric on the sides, Baby Hug 4 in 1 is the perfect ally to take care of your baby while managing your daily activities.

It is possibly the most complete portable  bassinet , crib, high chair, reclining (3 setting levels)  napper and etc  that can be used in the smallest of spaces and easy to move from room to room.

For some fussy babies, moving the bassinet back and forth gives them a soothing feeling and it is really great to get your baby to sleep. It gives the same sensation of falling asleep in a moving car.

Thanks to the X-frame, the entire product can be easily bugged even through narrow passages of the apartment, which can be important for apartments with many hallways and especially the doors are very narrow.

It also comes with an electronic toy bar to stimulate your baby's curiosity with 6 lullabies,  6 energizing jingles and 3 hanging soft toys and cute blinking lights.

What we didn’t like about the Chicco Hug 4 in 1

The Chicco Hug doesn’t come cheap. Based on the added features and versatility , it is more expensive than most bassinets. However, it’s really worth the money based on the quality and functionality.

The wheels squeak after a while and it can’t be annoying if your baby doesn’t like the squeaking sounds. You could fix it by oiling the bearings inside of the wheels.

Lastly, the safety belt straps can be a little hard and may discomfort the baby. Also, putting on the safety belt to sleep overnight can also be disruptive for the baby to move naturally.

PROS

  • Versatile
  • Can be used up to 36 months of age
  • Many features and functionality
  •  Very portable and mobile
  • Great for small spaces

CONS

Arm's Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1

Arm’s Reach - The Company

Arm’s Reach is well known for its co-sleeper bassinets and has been endorsed by many paediatricians, ob/gyns and infant care specialists for more than 2 decades. Over the years it has also won numerous awards for its flagship co-sleeper or bedside bassinets.

Arm’s Reach is possibly the first company that conceptualized the bedside co sleeper bassinet before any other and they are still focussed on delivering the best bassinets for breastfeeding until today. It is also the first patented co-sleeping product that attaches securely to the parent’s bed.

Arm’s Reach Concepts Bedside Bassinets

All of Arm’s Reach bassinets are co-sleeper or bedside bassinets.

Our recommendation is the compact Arm's Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1 which has the comfort of a bedside bassinet and the nostalgic charm from its elegant curved wooden ends.

Apart from the Mini Ezee 3in 1 Arm’s Reach also has the Ideal Ezee 3 in 1 , Arm’s Reach Concepts Cambria , Clear Vue and Versatile models which are also bedside co sleeper bassinets.

Arm’s Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1 Bedside Bassinet

There are a few different models in the Arm’s Reach Concepts Bedside Bassinet collection. We are recommending the Mini Ezee 3 in 1 for c-section moms basically of its compactness and versatility.

It is a 3 in 1 bassinet , basically

  1. Bedside bassinet
  2. Free standing bassinet with four wheels to move around the house
  3. Playard when baby is older

What we like about the Arm’s Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1 Bedside Bassinet

The Arm’s Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1 Bedside Bassinet is a combo bassinet and it is targeted for parents who want to maximize their investment.

It can be used for more than 6 months as the bassinet packs a playard when the baby gets older.

It is very easy to assemble and easy to move around.

Although it has only 2 wheels it is portable and also comes with a travel bag, so you can bring it for road trips and great for travels.

The Arm's Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1 is also built compact so you can fit it in small spaces or when you don’t have a large room.

Finally, it is all around mesh which is great for air ventilation and visibility to keep a close eye on your baby.

What we didn’t like about the Arm’s Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1 Bedside Bassinet

It is a great bedside bassinet but there is just a thing or two about it that we can’t agree to.

Firstly, being a single frame bassinet, you wouldn’t be able to set it to an inclined position to ease reflux or gas.

Secondly, unboxing a new one tends to have a chemical smell to it. Probably need to off-gas it for a few days before you can use it.

And lastly, it stands a little low compared to standard bed height, also you can’t adjust the height settings.

PROS

  • Bassinet and also a play yard
  • Build with 2 wheels ease for moving around
  • Fits in small places (the Mini Ezee is smaller than the Ideal Ezee)
  • All around mesh for good ventilation and visibility

CONS

  • No incline setting for reflux
  • Needs to offgas - has a chemical smell with unboxed.

Graco Sense2Snooze

Graco- The Company

Even from the start, Graco parents have been teaming up to help other parents. Graco was founded in 1942 as Graco Metal Products. But the Graco story really begins in 1953, when engineer Rex Thomas dreamed up the company’s first baby product: the Swyngomatic automatic baby swing.

Graco Sense2Snooze Bassinet

The Graco Sense2Snooze Bassinet with Cry Detection Technology is the only baby-operated bassinet by Graco.

The Cry Detection Technology uses a built-in microphone that's designed to hear baby's cries and respond by automatically adjusting the bassinet's settings to help soothe baby back to sleep.

With head-to-toe soothing motion, 3 different speeds, 2-speed vibration, white noise, 10 sleepy songs, and 10 soothing sounds, the bassinet can find the right combination of settings to help calm the baby.

The bassinet also includes settings that allow you to save baby’s favorite soothing combinations.

Dimmable lighting on the parent controls makes it easy to adjust the settings day or night.

Additionally, the cozy bassinet has airy mesh sides for both breathability and visibility, and blocks light with the reversible canopy.

The washable mattress and integrated storage for baby's essentials offer easy convenience.

  • Cry Detection Technology detects and automatically responds to baby's cries to help soothe baby back to sleep
  • The head-to-toe, soothing motion is gradual and includes varying speeds to help baby get back to sleep
  • 3 different motion speeds are included to provide the right pace to fit baby's preference
  • 2-speed vibration helps to further soothe and comfort baby
  • Choose from white noise, music, or nature sounds to help soothe baby to sleep

What we like about the Graco Sense2Snooze

The Graco Sense2Snooze is a compact bassinet with many bells and whistles.

The main feature is the cry detection technology that automatically responds to baby’s cries and soothes baby back to sleep.

Apart from that it also has a built in vibration mode to further soothe and comfort the baby.

Most importantly the Graco Sense2Snooze has a small footprint of less than 3 ½ sq ft so it is perfect for small spaces. It also has 2 wheels for mobility and portability around the home and easily moving from room to room.

The bassinet has an all around mesh allowing for air flow and visibility and has storage pockets to keep baby and mommy essentials such as baby wipes and diapers.

What we don’t like about the Graco Sense2Snooze

The rocking function is comforting for the baby but the vibrating function is a little strange and loud. It can frighten the baby and startled.

THe Graco Sense2SNooze does not have a tilt / incline function to help babies with congestion and reflux.

Due to the small foot print of the bassinet, taller / bigger babies may outgrow this bassinet after 3-4 months.

PROS

  • Easy to assemble
  • Sleek looking
  • Automated cry detection and soothing feature
  • Size. Only 3.5 sq ft area
  • Very sturdy

CONS

  • Buttons are clanky and noisy when pressed
  • Loud vibrating mode
  • No tilt function

Why a bassinet?

The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommends an infant to be placed on their backs to sleep from birth until 1 year old. It also recommends a firm sleep surface for babies to sleep on.

The AAP also recommends bassinets for babies to sleep in (other than crib, portable crib or playard) and it is also advised for babies to room share (without sharing beds) with parents for the 1st 6 months.

All of the recommended bassinets for breastfeeding above are also in compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

While CPSC is the body that sets the safety regulations for manufacturers to comply, essentially a product with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) seal is the stamp of approval for the bassinet or product to be fully compliant of all set out safety standards.

Note: All products recommended above are JPMA certified.

More importantly, bassinet is the most compact and portable compared to a crib or playpen.

When you have a small or confined space, you’ll need a nippy bassinet that has all the functionality (with the baby able to sleep safely and comfortably) and also have as much convenience as possible.

The average dimension of  a bassinet is about 36 inches by  18 inches or about 4.5 sq ft. For the purpose of functionality our recommendations are nothing over 6 sq ft , which is something like this.

How to choose a bassinet for small spaces

Apart from functionality, safety and ease of use, here are some factors you’ll need to consider when looking for a bassinet for small spaces.

About 75% of twin births are via c-section, that means it can be painful and inconvenient for mommy to keep getting up to nurse and comfort twin babies every 2-3 hours in the first few months of birth. Bedside or co-sleeping bassinets are great for this.

Check out our article on the best bassinets for c-section moms here.

Storage baskets

Babies need a few essentials such as diapers, a set of clean clothes, baby wipes and toys to sooth them and much more.

Breastfeeding as well has a few essentials like nipple creams, nursing pads, water bottle, breast milk collector like Hakkaa and etc.

You don’t want to be searching for them when you need them. You should pick a bassinet that has a storage basket or compartments to keep these essentials within easy reach.

If they don’t have any, you could look out for storage caddies to help you. When you have a set of twins, everything doubles, so storage caddies are really important to have.

Portability

Bassinet with wheels is definitely one that is more advantageous as you can move it from room to room in the house.

Also, you may want to consider a bassinet that is easily folded and transported so you can bring it along should the need of travelling arise.

Ventilation and Visibility

Bassinets are smaller compared to cribs and your baby is likely to move around or toss from side to side when sleeping.

Having a meshed wall (if the bassinet is fully mesh it’s even better) allows better air flow and ventilation.

It can be also a suffocation hazard if the sides of the bassinet prevents the baby from breathing property (especially non-breathable material).

Budget / Renting

If getting a bassinet is going to blow a hole in your wallet, you may consider renting from Babyquip. They also have rental plans for other baby gear and essentials.

FAQ

What should baby sleep in when they outgrow bassinet?

After 6 months, when your baby is able to roll , push himself up with hands and knees, it is time to transition your baby to sleep in a crib or a pack n’ play.

However a pack n’ play may be more practical for a small space or room. There are also 2 in 1 bassinets which can be expanded into a pack n play, like the Arm’s Reach Mini Ezee 3 in 1.

Is a crib or bassinet better for a newborn?

Either one is perfectly fine.

However, a crib may take up more space and that may not be the best option when you have limited space.

There are also benefits of having a bassinet for a newborn.

The bassinet which is more cozy and compact mimics the womb and this gives the snuggly familiarity and comfort for your baby.

What is considered a small bassinet?

Standard crib size is 30″x 54″ or a 1620 square inch footprint.

A smaller Pack and Play is 39″ x 25″ or a 1140 square inch footprint. Bassinets come in various shapes and sizes, but overall, a smaller bassinet will fall under a 1000 square inch footprint. A small bassinet is anything less than 6 sq ft (square feet = square inch / 144). All of the bassinets reviewed and recommended above fall into this category.

FINAL VERDICT

After reviewing the best 5 bassinets for small spaces, we recommend the Chicco Hug 4 in 1. The Chicco Hug is made perfectly for small and confined spaces. It is also great for single floor dwellings like apartments and flats.

You can move it room to room with comfort and ease

Also, Chicco Hug is so versatile you could use it as a highchair, incline napper, overnight sleeping bassinet, feeding (inclined position) and just lounging around with you when you’re in the kitchen or your living room.

Lastly, your baby could use it right up to 3 years old.

Coming in a close second is the Graco Sense2Snooze for its many features yet keeping it to a small footprint. With the crying detection technology, the Sense2Snooze can lull your baby to sleep without needing you to wake up constantly to soothe her.

At the end of the day, choosing the best bassinet for small spaces is entirely up to you as there are quite a few factors that will decide including budget, storage, comfort and more importantly safety.

Final Words

We hope you have enjoyed our best bassinet for small spaces article as much we have enjoyed preparing it for you. We hope our research and recommendation has helped you in all ways possible searching for the perfect bassinet for you and your little one.
